Final Project, Engineered Print “Picnic Dress”
Model: Claire Wang
Photographer: Michaela Shuster
Concept
This playful engineered print is inspired by my love of picnics. I wanted to capture the mouthwatering tastes and freshness of summer. I accomplished these ends using painterly strokes, bold colors, and organic shapes. I also played with the gingham patterning typical of traditional picnic blankets, giving them a fun and modern look and feel. I cinched the waist of the dress to accentuate the picnic blanket print on the topography of the body.
MUSEUM PROJECT:
This collection of prints is inspired by the Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat. Tu Bisvat celebrates the planting of the trees in anticipation for spring. The holiday celebrates growth, fruitfulness, and renewal, asking us to connect with nature when (in America anyway) we are in the dead of winter. The prints are meant to emulate a sense of vibrancy, energy, and hopefulness for regrowth. The motifs on the pattern reference the common nuts and fruits consumed during Tu Bishvat. I was also inspired by Hilma Af Klint’s visual navigation of spirituality. The graphic movements and curly-ques were influenced by her painting “The Ten Largest, No. 7, Adulthood” (1907)(exhibited at the Guggenheim 2018-2019). My prints and experiments explore spirituality, ripeness, and joy.
